How the math works

Four fees, one small sale

Etsy charges fees at different layers of one order. The listing fee ($0.20) is per item sold. The transaction fee (6.5%) applies to the order total — item price plus shipping you charge. Payment processing is a percentage plus a fixed amount, set by country. And Offsite Ads (12–15%) applies only when Etsy's external advertising brought the buyer.

Profit per order

profit = (items × price + shipping_charged) − listing − transaction − processing − offsite − (items × cost + shipping_cost)

Why Offsite Ads stings

At 15%, an Offsite Ads order can consume a quarter of a typical handmade margin. The fee is charged on the full order value, so a $40 order with free shipping hands Etsy $6 in Offsite fees alone — on top of everything else. If a large share of your orders arrives through Offsite Ads, your real blended margin sits well below the sticker margin.

Quantity matters

Listing fees scale with quantity sold, but processing has a fixed component per order. That's why multi-item orders carry a materially better margin than single-item orders — one reason bundle offers work so well on Etsy.

Questions

Etsy calculator FAQ

What fees does Etsy charge per sale?

On a typical US sale you pay: a $0.20 listing fee per quantity sold, a 6.5% transaction fee on the order total (item price plus shipping), a payment processing fee (around 3% + $0.25 in the US), and an Offsite Ads fee of 12–15% if the order came from an offsite ad. Regional operating fees may apply in some countries.

How is the 6.5% transaction fee calculated?

It applies to the order total including the shipping you charge and gift wrap, plus sales tax where applicable — not just the item price. Free-shipping listings therefore pay the fee on the full bundled price either way.

When do Offsite Ads fees apply?

If Etsy advertised your item off-platform (Google, Facebook, etc.) and the buyer clicked through, you pay an Offsite Ads fee: 15% if your 12-month revenue is under $10,000 (participation is mandatory), or 12% if you are above $10,000 and opted in. The fee is capped at $100 per order regardless of order total.

Is the listing fee charged once or per item?

The $0.20 listing fee is charged when the listing is published and again per quantity sold in an order — so a single order of 3 units incurs $0.60 in listing fees. Renewals also cost $0.20.
