TikTok Shop Fee Calculator
TikTok Shop's 6% referral fee looks low — until you stack affiliate commissions, ad spend, and returns. See your real profit per order with every cost layer included, not just the headline rate.
How the math works
The 6% illusion: TikTok Shop's real cost stack
TikTok Shop advertises a 6% referral fee that includes payment processing — genuinely lower than Amazon's 8–15% referral plus separate processing. But sellers who price for 6% discover the real cost of selling on TikTok Shop runs 35–55% of revenue. The gap between the advertised fee and the actual cost is where most TikTok Shop sellers lose money without understanding why.
Layer 1: Referral fee (the only platform fee)
Unlike Amazon, Etsy, or Shopify, TikTok Shop charges a single unified fee. The 6% (5% for jewelry, 3% for new sellers' first 30 days) covers both referral and payment processing — there is no separate transaction fee, no per-order flat charge, and no listing fee. On a $30 product, that is $1.80. Simple, transparent, and genuinely the lowest platform fee among major marketplaces:
Layer 2: Affiliate commissions (the TikTok tax)
This is the cost that catches every seller moving from Amazon or Shopify. TikTok Shop is a discovery-first platform — buyers find products through creator content, not search. To get that content, you pay affiliate commissions: 5–15% on the open marketplace, 10–20% for targeted creator collaborations. If 50% of your sales come through affiliates at 10% commission, the blended cost is 5% of total revenue — nearly as much as the referral fee itself:
The calculator handles this blending automatically — enter your commission rate and the share of sales from affiliates, and the effective cost is calculated on total revenue, not just affiliate revenue.
Layer 3: Ad spend (practically required)
TikTok Shop Ads are technically optional. In practice, sellers without active campaigns see traffic decline 30–50% month over month after launch momentum fades. The algorithm rewards consistent ad investment. Most successful sellers allocate 15–25% of revenue to ads. On a $30 product, that is $4.50–$7.50 per unit in ad cost alone — more than the referral fee and affiliate commission combined. Enter your ad cost per order (monthly spend ÷ monthly orders) to see the real picture.
Layer 4: Fulfillment and shipping
Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT) charges pick-and-pack fees of $2.50–$4.50 per order plus storage at $0.75–$1.50/cubic foot/month. Seller fulfilled runs $3–$8 per order via your own 3PL. Either way, fulfillment costs 8–15% of order value for products in the $20–$80 range. This is the second-largest cost bucket after advertising.
Layer 5: Returns and refund admin
TikTok Shop return rates run 10–20% for fashion, 5–10% for beauty, 3–8% for home goods. When a buyer returns, TikTok refunds your referral fee but keeps an administration fee of 20% of that fee, capped at $5 per SKU:
The calculator amortizes this across all orders — enter your return rate and the per-order cost appears automatically. It is a small number per order, but it compounds with the shipping, restocking, and inventory damage that returns cause.
The full stack on a typical order
On a $30 beauty product with 6% referral, 10% affiliate commission on 50% of sales, $6 ad cost, $4 fulfillment, 8% return rate, and $9 product cost: referral $1.80 + affiliate $1.50 + ads $6.00 + fulfillment $4.00 + refund admin $0.03 = $13.33 in fees and logistics. Subtract $9 product cost and you are left with $7.67 profit — a 25.6% margin. Not bad, but a far cry from the "94% goes to me" mental model that the 6% referral fee creates.
The same product without affiliate sales and with $3 ad spend would earn $12.17 — 40.6% margin. The difference between 25.6% and 40.6% is entirely in the affiliate and ad layers, which is why those two inputs are the most important levers to optimize. Use the ROAS break-even calculator to find the maximum ad cost your margin can absorb, and the break-even units calculator to see how many orders you need at this margin to cover fixed costs.
Questions
TikTok Shop fee calculator FAQ
How much does TikTok Shop charge sellers?
TikTok Shop charges US sellers a single referral fee: 6% on most categories, 5% on jewelry and pre-owned items, and 3% for new sellers in their first 30 days. This fee already includes payment processing — there is no separate transaction fee. The referral fee is calculated on the product price plus shipping charged to the buyer, minus TikTok-funded discounts. Sales tax is excluded.
Is TikTok Shop cheaper than Amazon?
On referral fees alone, yes — 6% vs Amazon's 8–15%. But the comparison is misleading. TikTok Shop requires affiliate commissions (typically 5–15% of affiliate-driven revenue) and ad spend (15–25% of revenue) to generate meaningful traffic, because the platform is discovery-first with limited organic reach. When you stack all costs, TikTok Shop's total take can run 35–55% of revenue — higher than Amazon for most categories. Use the calculator to model your full cost stack before comparing platforms.
Do I have to pay affiliate commissions on TikTok Shop?
Affiliate commissions are technically optional but practically required for meaningful revenue on TikTok Shop. The platform's discovery model favors products with active creator promotion. Open marketplace commissions run 5–15%; targeted creator collaborations run 10–20%. If affiliate sales make up 40–60% of your revenue (common for growing brands), the blended impact on total revenue is 4–9%. Most sellers set 10–15% to attract competitive creators.
What is the TikTok Shop refund administration fee?
When a buyer returns an item, TikTok refunds your referral fee but keeps a refund administration fee of 20% of that referral fee, capped at $5 per SKU. On a $30 order with a 6% referral fee ($1.80), the admin fee would be $0.36. The calculator factors this in when you enter your return rate.
Why is my TikTok Shop profit so much lower than expected?
Most sellers budget only for the 6% referral fee and discover the real cost is 3–5x higher. The missing layers are: affiliate commissions (5–15% of affiliate revenue), ad spend (15–25% of total revenue), shipping and fulfillment (8–15%), content production (video is mandatory on TikTok, not optional), and returns (3–8% of revenue). Run every order through the calculator with all layers filled in — the profit-per-unit number is almost always lower than the "6% fee" mental model suggests.
Should I set my price based on the new seller 3% rate?
No. The 3% promotional rate lasts only 30 days. If you price for 3% referral, your margin collapses when the standard 6% kicks in. Always model your pricing on the standard rate from day one — the 30-day promo is a bonus, not a foundation. The calculator lets you switch between rates to see the margin difference.
